Helene D. Horne
Died: Thursday, December 14, 2006
Helene D. Horne, a resident of Southold, died at Eastern Long Island Hospital on December 14. Mrs. Horne had suffered from pulmonary fibrosis.
Mrs. Horne was born at Eastern Long Island Hospital in Greenport on November 4, 1934 to Anna M. (nee Dimbat) and Reinhold J. Tappert. She married Ira J. Horne, Jr. on August 26, 1961 in Greenport.
She lived in town her entire life — a true native. Her great-grandparents owned Drach’s Cigar Store — well known for the wooden Indian out front — which later became Tappert’s Book Store on Front Street in Greenport.
She was very proud of her heritage and roots in the community and in St. Peter’s Lutheran Church.
From 1988 to 2002, she was a senior clerk typist in the Southold Town Clerk’s Office. At various times, she served as secretary to the Southold Town unit of the CSEA and was a director in the Southold Town Republican Club and chairperson of the Sunshine Committee. She was also a NYS notary.
Upon retirement, Mrs. Horne enjoyed traveling, gardening, reading, exploring her family roots, spending quality time with family and friends and was always ready for a good party! She touched many, many people with her thoughtfulness and love. “She was a great mom and our best friend,” read a family tribute.
She kept busy over the years as a member of a bowling team, ladies’ golf group and bridge group, and with the “Red Hat Ladies.” She traveled monthly with good friends to the Bellport Playhouse and was still helping to organize reunions for her Greenport High School classmates. Her great wit and kindness will be missed by all.
Predeceased by her husband, Ira Horne, Jr. on March 27, 1989, Helene is survived by five children, Karen L. Horne-Grant of Peconic, Alan W. Horne of Mattituck, Kristin E. Horne of Mattituck, Michael J. Horne of Southold, and Kevin J. Horne of Southold; a special companion and friend, Charles Witzke; a brother, Theodore Tappert of Lindenhurst, and two grandchildren, Jesse and Christa Grant of Peconic.
The family received friends at the DeFriest-Grattan Funeral Homes in Southold. Funeral services were held at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Greenport by Reverend Garret M. Johnson, pastor. Interment was at the Sterling Cemetery in Greenport.
