Died: Wednesday, November 22, 2006
Age: 95
Amelia M. Hand, “Mil,” who lived at Meadowood at Worcester in Lansdale, PA, passed away in her sleep on November 22.

Mrs. Hand was born on May 12, 1911 in Sag Harbor to Frank and Mary Markowski. She grew up in Sag Harbor and became a registered nurse, taking her training at Jamaica Hospital in Jamaica, NY. After earning her nursing degree, she stayed at the hospital, working all areas, including being an operating room nurse.

She married in 1932 and had a son, Urban Reininger III. In 1947 she and her son returned to the area where she purchased a home on Davids Lane and used part of it as a nursing home, which was greatly needed at that time.

In 1952 she married George Beaman Hand of East Hampton and no longer took in nursing patients. The Hands lived on Davids Lane and Mil was a private duty nurse. Through the years she took care of many famous people including Jackie Kennedy’s father, John Steinbeck and Edie Chrysler, with whom she traveled to Europe many times.

Mil was widowed in 1978. In later years, she divided her time between her home in Palm Beach Gardens, FL, and her Three Mile Harbor home.

Mrs. Hand was a lifetime member of LVIS and had been very involved with the Southampton Hospital Auxiliary and the Hampton Classic through the years.

She is survived by her son, Urban S. Reininger III and five grandchildren: David Reininger of Herndon, VA, John Reininger of Lansdale, PA, Cathy Reininger of Wilmington, DE, Urban S. Reininger IV of East Hampton, and Christopher Reininger of Norwalk, CT. She is also survived by six great-grandchildren: Elizabeth, Emily, Andrew, Bradley, Jason and Natalie; nephew Joseph Markowski of Sag Harbor and niece Mrs. Edward Wengler of Wantagh, NY.

Interment was at South End Cemetery in East Hampton.

Contributions may be made in her name to Meadowood at Worcester, in Lansdale, PA, where she resided for the last eight years of her life, or to the organization of your choice.
