James O. Carter, Sr.

Died: Saturday, November 11, 2006
Age: 76
James O. Carter of East Hampton died on November 11 at his home.

Also known as Charlie, Mr. Carter was born on August 11, 1930, to the late Iccola and Lelor Carter in Havelock, North Carolina.

He began working in Amagansettís Promise Land in 1950 and was also employed by East Hampton Middle School from which he retired in 1995. After retirement, he worked as a caretaker for a few homes in Georgica Estates. A few of Carterís hobbies were carpentry, working in the yard and garden and fishing.

He leaves behind second wife Doris Carter (nee Clinton) and their six children, Vernetta and James Carter, Philman and Aretha Clinton, Vickie Hunter and Dwayne North. He also leaves behind his children from his first marriage, Sheila, Kenny, James O. Jr., Cheryl, Jeffrey, and Gene Carter.

In addition he leaves a son Willie, a daughter Sharon, and three sisters, Evana Fenner, Matilda Hodge and Nellie Carter. He also leaves brothers, Rufus, Carl, Peter, Isaac and Isaiah Carter; 22 grandchildren; 9 great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces and nephews. Carter was predeceased by a brother, Roland Carter and his first wife, Evelyn R. Hayes.

A funeral was held November 15 at the Calvary Baptist Church in East Hampton. Interment was at the Piney Grove Ame Zion Cemetery. Donations may be made to East End Hospice in Westhampton Beach.
