James H. Klein, of Mattituck, died of pneumonia at Peconic Bay Medical Center in Riverhead last Thursday.

Mr. Klein was born in Greenpoint, Brooklyn on July 20, 1921 to Cecilia (nee Nestle) and Edward Klein. During World War II, he served in the United States Navy aboard the U.S.S. Ticonderoga and U.S.S. Jones at the Mattituck Presbyterian Church. Together they made their home in Mattituck, where they lived for 57 years.

Mr. Klein was a graduate of Brooklyn Technical High School, the Pensacola Flying School and took courses in Chemical Engineering from Rutgers University. For 38 years, he worked at Brookhaven National Laboratory, retiring as a technical specialist and supervisor.

He was a member of the East End Retired Officers Club, the U.S.S. Ticonderoga (a veteran’s organization) and the Brower’s Wood Association of Mattituck.

As a husband, Dad, grandpa, great-grandpa and friend, James H. Klein was a “Man of Character,” survivors said. “Jim shared it and lived it. His character sustained him through it all. Thank God for Jim!”

Surviving are his wife, Doris of Mattituck; a daughter, Marilyn J. Klein of Mattituck and a son, Edward S. Klein of Mastic Beach; five grandchildren and one great-grandson. He was predeceased by his brother, Edward Klein, who gave his life for the country during World War II in Germany.

The family received friends on Monday at the DeFriest-Grattan Funeral Home in Mattituck. Religious services were slated to be held today at the Advent Lutheran Church in Mattituck by Reverend George Summers and Reverend Richard Jones. Interment, with military honors, is at the Calverton National Cemetery.
