Raymond J. Akscin, a life-long resident of Southold and the founder of Akscin’s Nursery, died at his home on October 8. He had been ill with leukemia.
Mr. Akscin was born in Southold on February 10, 1917 to Madeline (nee Dzenkauskas) and William Akscin. He was a graduate of Southold schools and attended Syracuse University. He later joined the United States Air Force where he enjoyed a long career serving during World War II as a B-24 bomber pilot and instructor. Retiring in 1977 as a Major, he had also been a pilot with T.W.A.
On November 22, 1947 he married Geraldine (nee Blanchard) in Springfield, Massachusetts. Together they lived in Southold until her death on May 7, 1995.
Mr. Akscin was a communicant of St. Patrick’s Roman Catholic Church in Southold and a member of the Bayport Aerodrome Society and the Thunderbird Club of New York.
Surviving are his son, Raymond Jay Akscin and his wife, Stella of Southold; a brother, George Akscin of Sarasota, Florida; and two grandchildren, Andrew and Stacey.
Friends were welcomed last Wednesday at the DeFriest-Grattan Funeral Home where prayer services were conducted by Monsignor John Sullivan, retired pastor of St. Agnes Roman Catholic Church in Greenport. Interment was at St. Patrick’s Roman Catholic Cemetery in Southold.
