Helen Aberman

Died: Saturday, September 30, 2006
Age: 93
Helen Aberman, an accomplished pianist, died in her home in East Hampton on September 30, with loving family members and caregivers at her side. She was known for her quiet patience and gentle nature, her willingness to help any who needed musical coaching and her unfailing dependability and sense of commitment.

Mrs. Aberman was born on January 15, 1913 in Manhattan to German immigrants and grew up in Brooklyn. At the age of four she contracted polio, which caused a lifelong weakness in her right leg. Despite this condition, she rode horses as a teenager and enjoyed skiing and sailing aboard her husbandís boat, Lady Helen, as an adult.

After graduating from Bay Ridge High School she studied piano at the Munich Conservatory of Music in Germany. It was there that she met her future husband, Ben Aberman, an American medical student. After completing their studies, they returned to New York, were married in 1939 and started their family of four children.

Mrs. Aberman was a homemaker until her talents as a musician were revealed when she was asked to fill in at a school fundraiser in the early 1960ís for a rehearsal pianist who was ill. Her career spanned more than 37 years with the Mount Vernon High School Scholarship Fund productions, the Civic Opera Company of Westchester, Manhattan New School opera workshops, as an accompanist for numerous vocalists. The performance of My Fair Lady, in her 25th year with the scholarship fund, was dedicated to her.

Dr. and Mrs. Aberman moved to East Hampton part-time in 1973 and permanently in 1987. After the death of her husband in 1988 she began playing for the East Hampton schools and the Community Theater Company of East Hampton. She retired from both in 1997 at the age of 84. In addition to her love of music, which she passed on to her four children and her grandchildren, Mrs. Aberman enjoyed gardening and traveling.

Mrs. Aberman is survived by four children, Jane Baringer and her husband Jim of East Hampton, Kathie Aberman of Liberty, NY, Richard Aberman and his wife Nancy of Georgetown, MA, and Avi-Khadir Aberman of Santa Fe, NM; 10 grandchildren, Kevin, Kirsten and Caitlin Baringer, Peter Belsky, Lucas and Benita Rose Buchanan, Emily Rose Aberman, and Shyela, Noora Lisa and Nikka Rose Aberman; and two great-grandchildren, Gabrielle Lamontagne and Praise Giddeo Belsky.

Her ashes will be scattered at sea, and a memorial service will be held on November 11, at 1 p.m. at the Wainscott Chapel. In lieu of flowers, her family suggests a donation may be made to a community theatre or school theatre department in her honor.
