Dorothy M. Disken died September 1 at St. Francis Hospital in Roslyn, New York.
Mrs. Disken was born in Brooklyn and grew up in Rosedale, Queens. While a guidance counselor in the New York City public schools, she and her sister, Lillian, bought a weekend home in Montauk. They became permanent residents in 1983. She was in love with the community and was particularly concerned with local environmental causes and active in Democratic politics and education.
She was also a founding member of the Concerned Citizens of Montauk (President 1980); Chair of the East Hampton Town’s Board of Assessor’s Review and a member of the Anti-Bias Task Force and the Montauk School Site Based Team. She was the East Hampton Democrat of the year in 1993 and a frequent speaker at local public meetings.
A long-time member of South Fork Country Club, Ms. Disken enjoyed golf and tennis.
Her sister, Lillian T. Disken is currently at South Shore Healthcare, Freeport, N.Y.
A prayer service was held September 4 at the Yardley and Pino Funeral Home and interment was held at the Most Holy Trinity Roman Catholic Cemetery. Memorial donations may be sent to Concerned Citizens of Montauk.
