Rudolph Morris Funn, Sr.
Died: Wednesday, March 29, 2006
Rudolph Morris Funn, Sr., was born in Powhattan, Virginia on March 29, 1925 to the late Neverson and Virginia Cabble Funn. According to family members, after a long illness, a tenderly Jesus came for Rudolph on July 30.
“Rudy,” as he was affectionately known, and his family relocated from Virginia to Riverhead at an early age. He received his education in the Riverhead School System. Loved ones say Rudy received the Lord Jesus as his savior and was baptized by the late Reverend John Joseph, who was at that time, pastor of the First Baptist Church of Riverhead.
Mr. Funn met and married the love of his life, Ruth Harris, in 1947, and they remained happily married for 58 years. They had two children: son Rudolph, Jr. and daughter Diane.
At an early age, he started working on the farm. Later he was employed by GLF in Riverhead. He was also employed by the Brookhaven National Laboratory and after 36 years of service, he retired in 1992.
Mr. Funn was active until his illness. During the 1960s he served as an auxiliary police officer. He loved attending the Riverhead Stock Car Races with his children and grandchildren. Another of Mr. and Mrs. Funn’s greatest pleasures was attending the sports events of their grandchildren.
He enjoyed dancing and traveling, especially to Atlantic City. He also enjoyed chauffeuring as a side hobby.
Mr. Funn was a very devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather and he loved his family. He was affectionately known to them as “Pop-Pop.”
Loved ones say they will always cherish his legacy of “toughness” and “love.”
He was predeceased by two sisters, Viola Rollins and Willie Mae Funn Murray. He leaves to cherish his memories his loving wife, Ruth; his son Rudy, Jr. “Sonny” (Sally); his daughter Diane (Ronnie); two sisters: Mabel Evans of Texas, Louise Brown (Wesley) of Riverhead; brother-in-law Billy Smith (Pauline) Cambria Heights, NY; Ophelia Etheridge of New York City; Lena Harris of Riverhead; nine grandchildren: Ty (Lori), Keisha, Doc (Caroline), Footie (Miriam), Quinn (Cassondra), Duckie, Tammy, Nevy and Nee Nee; 11 great-grandchildren: Little “Q”.
