Sandra Miller

Died: Thursday, July 06, 2006
Age: 64
Sandra (Sandy) Miller, who divided her time between New York and the Hamptons for more than 35 years, died last Thursday at her home in Water Mill with her husband, Geoffrey Conway, at her side. She had fought a long battle with cancer.

Ms. Miller, who was born in the Bronx, first came to the Hamptons on a weekend visit but so loved the area that she stayed for the summer and kept returning for the next 20 years. In 1992, she and Mr. Conway were married and she began spending summers and weekends in Water Mill. Over the years she made many friends in the area, particularly among those who shared her love for the arts and her enthusiasm for tennis. She volunteered her time to the Hamptons International Film Festival, to Bay Street Theatre and to the organizers of Southampton Hospital’s annual benefit party. She was also a member of the East Hampton Racquet Club.

Ms. Miller particularly loved the ballet and she spent many hours as a volunteer for the New York City Ballet. The ballet and the students whose lives she touched as a science teacher at Roosevelt High School in the Bronx and later as a guidance counselor at New York’s Stuyvesant High School were her two passions. She was known for her warmth, her intelligence and her dedication, qualities that were recognized by her colleagues at Stuyvesant who, earlier this year, presented her with a plaque in appreciation for the “caring, generosity and dedication to her profession” demonstrated in more than 40 years of service to students.

In addition to her husband, Ms. Miller is survived by her brother, Harvey Miller and his wife Linda of Ridgefield, Connecticut, as well as nieces Jennifer and Francesca and a nephew John. Services were held at Yardley & Pino Funeral Home in Sag Harbor last Friday, and interment was at the Jewish Independent Cemetery in Sag Harbor. Donations in Ms. Miller’s name may be made to the Animal Rescue Fund in Wainscott.
