Stewart Ward Dewar

Died: Wednesday, June 07, 2006
Age: 70
Stewart Ward Dewar of Southold died at his home on June 7 of cancer. He was born on January 8, 1936 in Yonkers, NY to Charlotte (nee Tromme) and Stewart Percy Dewar.

Mr. Dewar had a full life. He served in the United States Navy from 1954-1958, when he was honorably discharged as a BT3. He continued to serve in the reserves until 1962. Later in life, Mr. Dewar worked as a mechanic and operated the “Have Tools Will Travel Repair Shop” in Southold. He volunteered with the local fire department and its Hook and Ladder Company. He was also a member of the Southold United Methodist Church.

Mr. Dewar was predeceased by his wife, Lois, and is survived by his two children, Keith Dewar of Westhampton and Christine Jaeger of Manorville; his step-son, Richard Haynie of Cutchogue; his sister, Joan Lawton of North Collins, New York; his companion Carol Losquadro of Southold; and three grandchildren, Ryan Jaeger, Logan Jaeger, and Richard Haynie Jr.

The family received friends on June 9 at the DeFriest-Grattan Funeral Homes, where firematic services were held that evening. Religious services were held there on June 10 by Reverend Ben Burns, former pastor of the Southold United Methodist Church, who received military honors from the U.S. Navy. As a final tribute, the Southold Fire Department carried Mr. Dewar’s casket on a truck, that he refurbished, through the village of Southold, past the firehouse and his home. Memorial donations can be made to the Southold Fire Department, P.O. Box 1469, Southold, NY 11937.
