Richard Balnis

Died: Wednesday, June 14, 2006
Age: 60
Richard Balnis died in his home last Wednesday in East Hampton.

He was born in 1945 in Greenport. He attended East Hampton High School, graduated from New Mexico Highlands University, and then continued his studies at Ohio State University.

Mr. Balnis was a physical therapist and owned East End Physical Therapy. He loved his work and didn’t miss a day in 35 years until stricken with esophageal cancer. Even when ill, all he wanted to do was get back to his job. Because of this love for his job, he never took a vacation. His relaxation came in the form of fishing, restoring his Corvette and Jeeps, and going to all the sporting events he could. He closely followed EHHS football, even the practices, and rugby. He sponsored the Montauk Rugby Team, East Hampton youth baseball, youth roller hockey, girls softball, and was especially proud to be a commissioner of East Hampton Youth Football for eight years.

“Rich spent the past 12 years mending and rehabilitating countless players during work hours and even allowed players to come in when the office was closed,” said John Ryan of the Montauk Rugby Club. “If you needed him, he made himself available so that you could get yourself back on the field to ‘play that crazy sport.’”

He is survived by his wife Dianne Balnis; his four children, Richard Balnis Jr. of East Hampton, Jennifer Fenelon of East Hampton, Robert Balnis of East Hampton and Ryan Balnis of East Hampton; six grandchildren, and four nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held at 12 p.m. on July 30th at the American Legion in Amagansett. Donations can be made to the Gwen Kosinski Foundation for Cancer Research, 318 Roanoke Ave., Riverhead, N.Y. 11901; Ryan Lynch Cancer Foundation, P.O.
