John Fugosich

Age: 79
John Fugosich, 79, of Southold died peacefully at his home on June 6. He was born in 1926 to John and Lucy Fugosich in Manhattan. He studied electrical engineering at The Straubenmuller Textile High School in Manhattan. After completing two years of high school, he joined the U.S. Navy in support of the war effort. While in service he was sent for radio training. He was a Seaman First Class. He received the American Theater Medal, the Artistic Pacific Service Medal and the World War II Victory Medal.

In June, 1950, he married his wife, Eva, in Manhattan. They lived in Queens and spent their summers in Southold since 1962. They have resided in Southold year-round since 1993.

After being honorably discharged from the Navy, John worked as a first-mate on tug boats in New York City Harbor. He later had a laundry route. He was a riveter at Republic Aircraft and attended The Delahanty Institute under the G.I. Bill. At Delahanty, he studied auto mechanics. He and his partner, Frank Kinkela, had a small business called The John and Frank Alteration and Maintenance Company. In the mid-1970s he obtained a high school equivalency diploma and began to study mechanical technology at Queenbough Community College. His last employer was Joyce Beverages in New Rochelle, where he was a maintenance mechanic.

John was known for his honesty, integrity, loyalty, and for his strong work ethic, which he passed on to his children. John had many talents. He was an excellent mechanic, a fine carpenter, mason, welder, painter, tile setter, roofer, and landscaper. He used many of his skills in the construction of his home here in Southold.

John enjoyed playing and watching sports, especially softball and hockey. Growing up along the Adriatic Sea, along the west side waterfront of Manhattan and near the Long Island Sound and Peconic Bay he enjoyed swimming, boating and fishing. In his later hears he enjoyed bowling with the Southold Senior Citizens and dancing with his wife and children at the local social events. He was a member of the Southold-Mattituck Senior Citizens Club and Adriatic Social Club of Southold.

He is survived by his wife, Eva; his two daughters, Carol Fugosich of Hollis Hills, N.Y. and Nancy Fugosich-Cheng of Towaco, N.J.; his two grandchildren Jachelyn Cheng and Justin Cheng; his brother, Nicolas Fugosich of Jackson Heights, N.Y. and his sister, Catherine Sucic of Southold, N.Y.

Visitation was held at the DeFriest-Grattan Funeral Home in Southold. Services were held on June 9th at St. Patrick’s R.C. Church in Southold with Pastor Rev. George J. Michell officiating. He was buried with military honors at the Calverton National Cemetery.
