John A. Keogh

Died: Monday, May 22, 2006
Age: 81
John A. Keogh, of Mattituck, died on May 22 at the Riverhead Care Center after a three-year illness.

He was born on June 30, 1924 in Ridgewood, N.Y., to Julie (nee Sullivan) and Charles J. Keogh. After graduating from Chaminade High School in 1942, Mr. Keogh served in the U.S. Army from 1943 to 1945. He was the recipient of the Asiatic-Pacific Service Medal and the Good Conduct and World War II victory medals.

On October 11, 1947, he married the former Fran Bohlinger in St. Albans, Queens. The couple made their home in Mattituck for the past 50 years. Mr. Keogh worked as a line foreman with LILCO for 38 years. He was a member of the Mattituck Fire Department and Company 863, and from 1968 until 2004 he was the Fire District & Department Secretary. In 1974 he was named New York State Fireman of the Year.

Mr. Keogh is survived by his wife, Fran; his four children, Peg Paasch of Laurel, Jack Keogh of Florida, James Keogh of Massachusetts, and Paul Keogh of Arizona; a sister, Mary Kelly of Rochester; eight grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren.

Firematic services were held last Thursday at the DeFriest-Grattan Funeral Homes in Mattituck. The Liturgy of the Christian Burial was held last Friday at Our Lady of Good Counsel Roman Catholic Church, and interment, with military honors, was in Sacred Heart R.C. Cemetery in Cutchogue. Memorial donations can be made to the Mattituck Fire Department and or the Mattituck Fire Department Rescue Squad.
