Mary R. Miner

Age: 91
Mary (May) Miner died peacefully at her home in Southold on May 12.

She was born in Oswego, New York on May 22, 1914 to Najeeb and Freida (nee Ahad) Karam. Mrs. Miner graduated from Oswego High School in 1932. She married Gilbert B. Miner in 1942 and moved to Southold that year, where Mr. Miner took a job as an Industrial Arts Teacher at Southold School.

The mother of three boys, Mrs. Miner was a Cub Scout Den Mother and volunteered as a catechist at St. Patrick Church. She was a member of the St. Patrick’s Rosary Society and volunteered with the American Red Cross rolling bandages at the Fire House. She also enjoyed playing bridge with “10-a-club” whose original members included old time Southolders like Belle Montgomery, Berta Dickerson, Madeline Baker, Esther Williams, Margaret Lehr, Olive Dickerson, Libby Albertson, and Alice Thompson.

After her oldest son was killed in Vietnam in 1969, Mrs. Miner joined The American Gold Star Mothers Chapter 61, where she was treasurer for many years. She and other Gold Star Mother organization volunteered countless hours making lap robes and feeding the veterans in support of the Riverhead Legion Veterans Clinic. She was called upon many times to place the wreath at local memorial celebrations and proudly rode in Memorial Day and Veteran’s Day parade on the North Fork.

Mrs. Miner was predeceased by her husband Gilbert, her son Capt. George L. Miner, her brothers, Edmund Karam and Frederick Karam, and her sister Louise Munksi. She is survived by her son, Paul Miner of Brentwood; her son Frederick Miner of Southold; her granddaughter Kristin Miner of Brentwood, and her sisters, Josephine Morse of Medina, Alice D’Amico and Helen Gill, both of Oswego.

The Liturgy of the Christian Burial was celebrated on May 16 at St. Patrick’s R.C. Church in Southold with Father George Mitchell officiating. Interment was at the church cemetery. Memorial donations can be sent to The Parish Outreach, c/o St. Patrick’s Church, P.O. Box 1117, Southold, NY, 11971.
