James Bitses

Age: 81
James Bitses, a Southold attorney, died on April 24 at Eastern Long Island Hospital.

He was born on May 7, 1924 in New York City and raised in Astoria, Queens. He graduated from J.H.S. 141 and W.C. Bryant High School. In 1943, Mr. Bitses entered the U.S. Army and served in the Philippines and New Guinea during World War II.

After the war, he completed his education and became a practicing attorney, working as an Assistant District Attorney in Queens County. In 1970, Mr. Bitses moved to Southold, where his family had a summer home in the Hortonís Point area. He maintained a private practice in Southold until his retirement.

Mr. Bitses was a great animal lover, especially of dogs and cats. For a number of years, he served on the Board of Directors of the North Fork Animal Welfare League.

He is survived by his brother, Thomas Sr.; a niece, Barbara; a nephew, Thomas Jr.; grandnephews, Chris and John, and Chrisís daughter, Ava. Greek Orthodox funeral services were held on April 28 in the DeFriest-Grattan Chapel with Father Dionisios Marketos of the Transfiguration of Christ Greek Orthodox Church in Mattituck presiding. Interment followed in the Cutchogue Cemetery.
