Charles West Edwards

Died: Friday, April 14, 2006
Age: 76
Charles West Edwards, of Greenport, died on April 14 at Eastern Long Island Hospital.

The oldest of nine children, Mr. Edwards was born on May 18, 1929 to John West and Lizzie Mae Horton Edwards. Though he left school early to help support his family and did not receive a formal education, he always believed in the importance of education and received his GED later in life.

Mr. Edwards was a longtime member of the Clinton Memorial A.M.E. Zion Church where he served for years as the Chairman of the trustees board. He was also a Sunday school teacher, an usher, and a rock for the Pastors and members. His testimony to the church had been for decades: “I promised the Lord a long time ago that I would serve him until I die, and I’m not gonna turn back now.” A dedicated husband and father and an advocate for literacy, he was one of the original members of CAST, a long-time member of the NAACP, and a chaperone for the Youth Center.

He was employed by Mullen Motors, Inc. of Southold for 51 years, where he recently received an award for the longest-serving employee in the company. He tried retirement for approximately six months but could not stay away, saying that his job was where his friends were.

Mr. Edwards was predeceased by his wife, Sarah Lee Edwards; his parents; one sister, Sarah Jean Edwards, and two brothers, Willie Lee Edwards and Leroy Edwards. He is survived by his three daughters, Jean D. Edwards and Charlene Edwards, both of Greenport, and Sharon L. Stephens of Upper Marlboro, Maryland; two sons, Charles A. Edwards of Greenport and David O. Edwards of Ridge; nine grandchildren, Yolanda Edwards, Selena Riggins, Courtney Edwards, Samantha Opong, Brian Edwards, Deon Shedrick, Sr., Welsey Shedrick, Andre’ Edwards, Sr., and Elijah Stephens; seven great-grandchildren, four sisters, one brother, a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and countless friends.

Visitation was held on April 18 at the Clinton Memorial A.M.E. Zion Church in Greenport. Homegoing services were held last Wednesday at the Church with Reverend Linda Thornill. Interment was in the Presbyterian Cemetery in Southold.
