Ella A. Beck

Died: Tuesday, April 11, 2006
Age: 68
Ella A. Beck of Southold died on April 11 while wintering in Florida. She was born to Ella Ann Norton on May 6, 1937 in Brooklyn to Edward and Rose (nee Freidman) Norton.

Mrs. Beck graduated from Huntington High School in 1955. On December 27, 1958 she met and wed Navy Ensign Victor Beck, also of Southold, and traveled the world with her family. Mrs. Beck raised six children while her husband pursued his Navy career. During this time she experienced lengthy separations from Mr. Beck, including the year he spent in Vietnam. She single-handedly managed the family’s entire move from San Diego to Yokohama, Japan while Mr. Beck was at sea.

Upon Mr. Beck’s retirement from the Navy, the Beck Family moved back to New York in 1977 and lived in Greenlawn for 18 years. Mrs. Beck was employed as a Licensed Practical Nurse at Carillon nursing home for 12 years.

In 1996, the Becks moved to Southold. Mrs. Beck was a member of the American Legion Lady Auxiliary and held the position of Chaplain. She was an avid bingo player and enjoyed fishing and visiting area casinos. Mrs. Beck’s devotion to her family and friends and her choice of a nursing career were indicative of her loving nature.

She is survived by Victor, her husband of 47 years; her daughter Judith of Windham, New Hampshire and Jane of Suffolk, Virginia; her sons, Edward of Virginia Beach, Victor of Sudbury, Massachusetts, Joseph of Bethpage, James of New York; eight grandchildren and one great-granddaughter.

Visitation and parish prayer services were held at the DeFriest-Grattan Funeral Home in Southold on Monday. The Liturgy of Christian Burial was celebrated yesterday at St. Patrick’s R.C. Church in Southold, with Father George Michell officiating. Interment was in St. Patrick’s R.C. Cemetery in Huntington.
