On 3-14-06, the Southold Town Conservation Advisory Council presented itself before the town board and submitted its updated mission statement for the town board's approval.
In short, the mission statement, as approved, makes the CAC the watchdog for the town's people, protecting and preserving the natural resources of the township — the eyes and ears of the community, for the common good of its citizens.
Although a lot of people have dedicated their time and efforts to this worthwhile goal, the permitting process is not protecting our natural resources to the extent it could.
The conservation of Southold's natural resources must not become political. All individuals and developers must be required to support the town's effort to save these natural resources and not be permitted to continue to contribute to further degradation.
The CAC, a volunteer group reporting to the town board, is the major public input in the permitting process and their input is an integral part of that process.
The dedicated members of the CAC will continue to advise the town board and develop recommendations to protect and improve the environment of our natural resources. That is their mission. That is their goal.
