Tune-ing Out

Dear Editor,

Recently I was listening to a talk radio show. The host said he was friends with Andy Rooney, (y'know that curmudgeon-ish but lovable guy at the end of "60 Minutes"). Yeah, that guy. He announced to the host that he did not like music of any kind! My reaction to that was "What the . . ?" I thought everybody grew up with "music." At least some kind.

When I was a kid around my house it was both kinds of music. Country and Western. Then Rock 'n Roll came in and that was the end of that for a while. I was perplexed as to why someone with supposed intelligence would make such an asinine statement. Again I said, "What the . . ?" I think Mr. Rooney is putting us on. But then again, I am a musician, and if you're a musician of course you would say "What the . . .?"

It's incomprehensible to you to hear someone say that they don't like music of any kind, sounds ludicrous, if not downright sacrilegious; it's beyond ignorance. From the contractor walking into the lumberyard to the secretary behind her desk, you just ask them: "Who do you like? SOMEBODY!" I mean c'mon, even Donald Trump likes SOMEBODY playing music. (And Republicans, too.) But I digress. So to quote a joke I heard on SNL once, Mr. Rooney, we'll be NBCing you soon, but don't be CBSing us either!
