Gritty Book

Dear Editor,

All East End political, fur and fin liberal activists should buy or borrow a copy of T.J. Parell's just published gritty book, Fish. Your penalty for failure, you'll be left out of that cocktail party knot of intense conversation centered on Fish, the "in" book of 2007.

It's a national read of solid, biting context, adversity, love and redemption within the world record U.S. prison system. The antihero, T.J., now comfortably residing in ample retirement in Sag Harbor, beat the billion to one odds to do so. He not only survived but materially succeeded. Using the same moral and mental fortitude that made that possible, he has turned and faced himself, publishing the reflection of past life before and after steel bars that almost all of us would have quietly and discreetly buried behind our privet hedges and checkbooks.

The cost-effective program of inmate education to prevent recidivism still eludes budget-minded, political, prison policy makers. You'll find your own nuggets of informational and emotional gold within the pages of Fish. The human as a prison inmate is a woefully neglected subject in our liberal activism!

Closing the back cover of Fish, some of us will softly self-whisper "There but for the grace of Providence, might have gone I."
