Here And Now

Dear Mr. Murphy,

We would like to respond to your October 11 article "Digital Mammography Coming to County Center . . . But When?" There is absolutely no need for Suffolk County residents to wait until this new technology is available at the Riverhead County Center, at some distant future date. Southampton Hospital has taken the initiative and has made the investment to ensure that this state-of-the-art diagnostic equipment is available to our East End residents.

Since May 2006, Digital Mammography has been available at Southampton Hospital's Breast Health Center and is now also available at the Hampton Atrium on Montauk Highway in Hampton Bays, and at the East Hampton Healthcare Center on Pantigo Road. We've been very busy and just the unit located at the Hospital is performing approximately 250 mammograms a week!

Furthermore, it is the Hospital's long-time policy to provide healthcare, including digital mammography, regardless of ability to pay. A woman who does not have insurance can still receive a mammogram. In addition, the South Fork Breast Health Coalition will provide complimentary transportation and babysitting help.

A digital mammogram reviewed by our 100% board certified radiologists will provide an accurate diagnosis and may save a life. To make a mammography appointment, call 726-8285. If a ride is needed or babysitting help is necessary, call 726-8606. Southampton Hospital urges all women of a certain age to get a yearly mammogram. It's fast, easy and your life could depend on it.
