Kiss Good-bye

Dear East Hampton Independent Editor,

My, how the Republican Party of today has corrupted that of not only President Lincoln but also that of Barry Goldwater, the epitome of the Conservative. Big government, burgeoning deficits, instilling religion into our political system, governmental involvement in the personal lives of its' citizens privacy including but not exclusive to telling women what they could or not do with their very own bodies. Distilling our liberties with domestic spying including wire tapping, our monetary transactions, public library reading material . . . (give it a gung-ho PR title such as "The Patriot Act") and your privacy as an American citizen is gone.

The Republican Party has been kidnapped by the Religious Right. Goldwater, an avid advocate of separation of church and state said, "I think every good Christian should kick Falwell's (Jerry) ass." He also said in 1994, "When you say 'Radical Right' today, I think of these money making ventures by fellows like Pat Robertson and others who are trying to take the Republican Party away from the Republican Party, and make a religious organization out of it. If that ever happens, kiss politics good by."

It appears that the classic Conservative Party is more akin to the values of the Democratic Party than those of today's Republican Party. It will be interesting to see by the results of the midterm election and the biggy in '08 if the voting Republicans realize they have been snafu-ed.
