The Great Jim

Dear Rick,

On Thursdays, I volunteer at Southampton Hospital in the waiting room (formerly the coffee shop) and I have time to read. I always pick up a copy of The Independent and the first thing I do is go to your column. I love your column, as does Bill, and when he calls me from Mattituck we always discuss it. He especially likes the ones you write about growing up in Sag Harbor.

In this week's issue, as I began to read it, and you were writing about your visit to upstate re: basketball, I said to myself, I wonder if he is going to write about Jimmy because Jim always told me about the times he spent with you there. As I kept reading, I thought I guess not, but there it was, the late, great Jimmy Spooner.

I was thrilled and, of course, very sad. I will never recover from the tragic death of my firstborn son. Yes, he was great, a great son, a great father, a great worker. Thank you for the kind words. I called up Bill last night, he was not home, but left a message, (Read Rick's column this week).
