The Ugly Factor

To The Editor,

The Springs Fire Department is considering a proposal to erect a 125-foot Communications Tower on their property.

The objections: health issues relating to radiation coming off the tower, houses within the fall zone, decrease in property values of properties surrounding the tower, the noise 24/7 that will be audible despite claims to the contrary, the ugly factor. These are significant concerns of all of us who live close by and the potential health risks are a concern for the community at large.

As I understand it, the range of the tower will be about a mile or so, which means we have to live with that monstrous thing for very little return to very few people. And, our cell phones work just fine now, as do many of our houseguests' cell phones. Several smaller towers can be erected (but do we need them?) at low to no health risk. Yes, smaller towers would be more expensive to put up but the tradeoffs outweigh the costs.

It has been clearly stated that the fire department does not need this tower for emergency communications so WHY do we need this? The monies the fire department will receive from rental revenues will be for future funding needs so, let us address their needs as they come up in the future or find some other way to build up their reserve fund.

Please, we urge the Springs Fire Department to be good caring neighbors. They have served this community nobly and I do hope this issue does not pit one historically good neighbor against the other.
