Unhealthy and Distorted?

Dear Independent,

As regards Mr. Jack Michel's column on Oprah Winfrey of August the 23rd, here's my perspective.

Firstly, the column should be renamed "My Perverted View" or perhaps be eliminated from the paper all together.

Mr. Michel should start out by realizing that the gay lifestyle, which is possibly up to 10% of the population, accounts for more than 80% of the AIDS cases in the country. In the Bible, God says, through Jesus, that: "I have come that you might have life and have it to the full." A lifestyle that brings a living death where we lose our God-given immune system and then have to battle each day just to stay alive and/or ultimately die a very horrendous and premature death does not in my estimation coincide with God's words of "the fullness of life."

So, to take a view that Oprah Winfrey or anyone else in our society can have a normal, loving, pleasant, soul-satisfying friendship without having sexual connotations is sick and disgusting. And that's just the problem, Mr. Michel; you look at things in an unhealthy, distorted and perverted way. And that's just the reason why I feel this column has no business in a public newspaper.

Editor's Note: What you're really saying is there is no business for anything to be in a newspaper unless YOU agree with it. The Independent has many diverse columnists more than any other local newspaper. We have Democrats, Republicans, Feminists, Humorists and Foodies among our ranks. Your contention that a "public" newspaper shouldn't publish a column about the gay lifestyle is a faulty one. A good newspaper offers diverse opinions from a wide spectrum: readers can choose which columns they like and read them. If you're reading "Gayview" and it offends you, why do you continue to read it?
