Shoot The Messenger

Dear Editor,

It's never a good finding when a message can easily be inferred from the name of the messenger. Such is often the case, however, in The Star, because it publishes "every letter to the editor it receives exclusively, with the exception of those sent anonymously, or those judged to be proselytizing, an invasion of privacy, libelous, or obscene," a policy that sometimes invites partisan screeds from those who would use the paper as a political platform. Whatever happened to the other - better - journalism standard that letters to the editor be responses to recently published editorials, opinions or special features? Surely, that age-old tradition of endorsing or opposing published discourse comes closer to respecting readers and the principles of fair journalism than open free-for-alls that can include details no longer remembered, references too unwieldy to check, and subject matter not reflective of The East Hampton Star's main geographical territory and audience.
