I want to commend the County Executive for expanding bus service on the S92 line. The additional routes will certainly make traveling easier for those who ride between the North Fork, Riverhead and the South Fork early in the morning or in the evening during the week. It was a long time coming and is a worthy addition.
Unfortunately, simply adding additional trips does not solve the significant overcrowding problem that still exists at peak hours nor does the new expansion provide Sunday buses.
Additional buses should be added at peak travel hours on the S92 line so that travelers are not forced to wait an hour for the next scheduled bus to arrive. Two buses, traveling in tandem, could significantly reduce the overcrowding problem seen in the morning and the evening.
Bus service should be provided on Sunday throughout the county. To test the feasibility of such an expansion, I propose instituting a pilot program on the S92 line. Sunday is no longer a day of rest and many people depend on public transportation to reach their places of employment on weekends.
I look forward to working with the County Executive, South Fork Legislator Jay Schneiderman, and all my colleagues on the County Legislature to provide these important services for our transit riders.
