College Crusade

Dear Editor,

We should publicly express our gratitude to New York Senator Ken Lavalle, for almost single handedly preserving the College on the East End. When Southampton College was closed by Long Island University, it was thought that it would be replaced by condominiums, etc. for our already congested area.

At a time when China, India and Europe are graduating hundreds of thousands of well-trained scholars and scientists, a local college with a national reputation would provide unique educational opportunities for young people in the community. Senator Lavalle had the idea of convincing SUNY Stony Brook University to take over the Southampton College campus. Moreover, he courageously obtained the funding to purchase the site for our State University, SUNY Stony Brook, and now Stony Brook-Southampton, under the aegis of Dr. Shirley Strum Kenny, is one of the top national institutions for higher education. To my view, academically this will be superior and much cheaper for young people and families of our area. As a resident of Southampton, I take pride in saluting the valiant, ingenious, and brilliant initiative of our State Senator, Ken Lavalle. Please join me in this well-deserved recognition.
