Dead Set

Dear Rick,

I can't understand why the Town of Riverhead is so dead set on installing a traffic circle on Middle Road between Osborn and Horton Avenues. I have obtained the map of their planned circle through one of the Town Board members, and I can't see how this will really be any improvement of the situation, especially with a hillside just west of Osborn! Wouldn't it be far less expensive to just block off the 100-yards of Middle Road between Osborn and Horton with Jersey Barriers at either end, simultaneously blocking that 100-yard hill to the west of Osborn the same way?!? Jersey Barriers are those concrete barriers that you see at work areas on the L.I.E. constantly.

Couldn't the Town at least try this solution for say, six months? If it didn't work out, all they'd have to do is remove the barriers and the situation would be no worse than it is right now! Maybe the problem is one of snobbery! God forbid that anyone not a civil engineer come up with a solution for a problem, moreover one that would be relatively simple and inexpensive! Or could the problem be that the Town may have already spent the grant money allocated for the project on something else, like the landfill boondoggle, and now the Town is committed to the traffic circle as a result?!? Mind you, this is pure speculation on my part, but after living in this town for over 20 years now, one does start to wonder why the Town never seems to even consider simple, inexpensive solutions to any problem!?!
