I just read your review of The Libertine. You wrote a very enlightening and perceptive piece. You are an excellent writer, and I enjoy your weekly columns.
However, you are a very bad historian. Charles II spent most of his exile in France while Oliver Cromwell imposed a military dictatorship in England. He was never known as "Bonnie Prince Charlie." This moniker was given to Charles Edward Stuart, the grandson of James II who was the monarch overthrown in the Glorious Revolution of 1688. Bonnie Prince Charlie was a Pretender to the British throne who received widespread support from the Scots. Initially he enjoyed some success against the English army, but was badly defeated at Culloden Moor.
