Outrageous Scam

Dear Rick,

Having visited Deep Hollow Ranch (Montauk) recently, I can only surmise the people who support the idea that private land should be turned over for ranch use are hopelessly misled.

Supporters seem to fall into four categories 1) friends and family of the Leavers, who own the ranch; 2) Democrats summoned to the public hearing by party boss Chris Kelley; 3) well-meaning citizens who have a romanticized notion of the "nation's oldest cattle ranch"; and 4) citizens who believe the ranch will be developed if the Leavers fold the tent.

At the recent public hearing several speakers spoke about the vistas, yet the ranch is frankly, rather ugly visually, a flat plain of parking lot, dust, and grazing land. The reserved area in question doesn't appear to be even visible from the road. What is visible is the giant mansion being built on top of the hill, no doubt to take advantage of breathtaking 270 degree water views. That would be, presumably, the new home of the "struggling" Leavers, who claim they will have to close the ranch if the two-acre reserved parcel in question isn't ceded to them. Poor darlings then they'll have to sell their $7 million new house. As for development, it is my understanding the development rights to much of the land have been sold, meaning most of it can't be built on.

What the ranch's proponents aren't getting is the land in question is OWNED by someone else, that is, it's private property. This is akin to having the town come in and tell one of us they are taking part of our backyard and giving it to the next door neighbor!

The saddest part of this whole affair was watching our five Democratic town board members sit there and pretend this is a viable issue while Kelley was advancing his line of nonsense. Does anyone in this town have the balls to tell Leaver and Kelley their outrageous scam borders on the criminal?
