Your 3/22 Letters was an interesting medley on a one note tune: homophobia.
On the one hand, there was Nicole Christine's letter in which she relates the outrageous hatred of the Phelps Family Christians, picketing the funerals of our soldiers slain and rejoicing over their death while wishing for even more of them. The reason for this blind rage is that there are "Gays" in the military and therefore God is cursing America. Reverend Fred Walton Phelp's statement, "You can't teach the bible without preaching the hatred of God would make any atheist take comfort in their belief" . . . or disbelief.
On the other hand, that shame faced letter was followed by two others, which for all intents and purposes could have been written by the same person. One was by a Jack McGreevy and the other by a Katherine Clawson. Homophobia it seems, is not restricted to the red states; it is alive and seemingly thriving right here in the blue Hamptons. I thought epitaphs such as "limp-wristers," "swishies," and references to "pithy fit" and "your gay friends" was relegated to that less enlightened age, now fortunately gone by, but it seems that there may be a rebirth in the making.
What is it that brings out the worst in people, the narrow minded, simplistic pigeon-holing of right and wrong, good or evil, poor or rich, left or right? The most obvious link which bridges these base emotions across our land is that the one hand and the other hand are both ardent Bush supporters. That's either a coincidence or a clue. Take your pick.
