Two Killed In Harbor Crash

Friends are already organizing a lasagna dinner to raise money for the families of Manuel Cunha, 58 and Tom Wheeler, 43 two Sag Harbor men killed Saturday night, when the Mustang they were in ran off Brick Kiln Road in Sag Harbor.

Darren Gengarelly is putting together the pasta dinner, which will be held this Saturday from 5 to 7 PM at Pierson High School. Call him at 631-872-3082 if you want to help out.

Funeral services for the men are under the direction of the Yardley and Pino Funeral Home in Sag Harbor. Cunha's family will receive guests from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 PM today, and Wheeler's loved ones will receive friends tomorrow during the same hours.

Police were alerted to the crash just after 3:30 Saturday afternoon. Responding officers determined a 2006 Mustang was traveling west on Brick Kiln Road when it swerved into the eastbound lane, then back into the westbound lane, then left the road and crashed into a tree, bursting into flames. Police said yesterday Cunha was driving the car, which was registered to Wheeler. Police reported their preliminary determination indicates excessive speed was a contributing factor in the accident. They're awaiting additional information from the Suffolk County Medical examiner's Office to see if there are any other factors.

The Sag Harbor Fire Department responded to the scene and extinguished the flames. The road was closed for the duration of the investigation. Both occupants of the car were pronounced dead at the scene.
