Kovar and Semlear Named To All-L.I. Team
Hampton Bays junior Genna Kovar and Pierson senior Bethany Semlear were both named to the elite All-Long Island team last week. In her third season playing on the varsity team, Kovar, the Baymen's junior midfielder, who also spends time at the center position, scored 13 goals and added 8 assists for the Baymen. It was the second time Kovar has been selected to the All-Long Island team. Hampton Bays finished its season 6-10.
Semlear, a splendid example of how a high school athlete is supposed to conduct herself, scored 13 goals and five assists at the forward position in her final varsity season. She was named the recipient of the Nancy Cole Award, which is given to a player the Suffolk County Field Hockey Coaches Association deems to have displayed the most dedication to the game, strong leadership qualities and respect for teammates and opponents as well as success in their school studies.
Semlear, who helped lead the Pierson Whalers to an 8-8 record this season, will attend the University of Connecticut next fall.
