Bees Find No Luck At Burns Tournament
The Bridgehampton boys' basketball team lost both of its games at Riverhead's annual Bob Burns Invitational Tournament last weekend, falling to the host Blue Waves 72-40 on Friday in the opening round before losing to Center Moriches 64-55 in the consolation contest on Saturday.
Against Riverhead, the Killer Bees battled the Waves to a 17-17 tie after the opening quarter before Tai Woodson led the hometown favorites on a 14-4 run in the second quarter, scoring eight of his game-high 18 points. Riverhead put the game out of reach in the fourth quarter, outscoring Bridgehampton 24-11.
Irving Fayman led the Bees with 15 points while Brandon LaPointe added eight points and CJ Shank had seven.
On Saturday, Bridgehampton looked impressive in the first quarter, outscoring Center Moriches 19-15 in the first quarter before another second quarter meltdown saw the Red Devils post 18 points to the Bees 11. Many of Center Moriches' baskets were scored by freshman phenom Jonathan Ward-Adams who was the game's leading point producer with 22. Center Moriches led 55-45 after three quarters.
Overshadowed in Bridgehampton's loss was the play of LaPointe who scored 18 hard-fought points. The bees will rely heavily on LaPointe, Fayman (15 points, 3 three-pointers) and Terrence Hires (12 points) as the season progresses.
