Hurricanes Fall in Finals
Westhampton Girls' Volleyball Edged by Glenn
And another one bites the dust. That was the general consensus around the Elwood/John Glenn girls' volleyball team late last Wednesday night as it defeated No. 2 seed Westhampton in three games, 25-20, 25-9, 25-19 at St. Joseph's College in Patchogue to win its seventh straight Suffolk County Class B championship.
Westhampton finished with one of its best seasons in team history, going a combined 14-4, including a League VI record of 11-1, which gave the Lady Hurricanes a share of the regular season title with Harborfields (11-1).
Westhampton reached the championship final after defeating No. 3 seed Mt. Sinai in a thrilling marathon match that spanned five games on November 6. The Hurricanes won the first two games by scores of 25-21, 25-20 before Mt. Sinai rallied to win game three 25-23 and game four 25-18. Westhampton needed stellar efforts from both Dana Barrett (game-high 16 kills) and Bianca Hernandez (game-high 36 digs) in order to prevail 25-12 in the fifth and deciding game.
Elwood/John Glenn (17-0 overall) dominated League VII this season and was one of only three Suffolk County teams to go undefeated during the season, through the Section XI playoffs.
