A home heating oil spill in Springs Friday morning brought out Department of Environmental Conservation officials, environmental experts and insurers. According to DEC spokesman Bill Fonda, around 10 that morning a driver from a local home heating oil company noticed something was seriously amiss. He'd arrived at a home on Hawthorne Avenue and begun to fill a 275-gallon tank
It seemed to be taking a long time and the driver reached under the deck toward the tank. "He felt oil," Fonda said. Altogether some 500 gallons were dispensed from the truck.
Tap water samples had been taken by Monday afternoon, product samples from the truck were taken and the soil was slated for testing yesterday. At press time, Fonda said the spill did not appear to have migrated far from the house's tank.
