Bonackers Fall To Glenn In OT

By Rich Smidt

In a season that saw more positives than anyone could have expected, the East Hampton boys' soccer team's resurgent move back into the upper echelon of League V concluded with a heartbreaking 2-1 sudden-death overtime loss at Elwood/John Glenn on Halloween afternoon.

Michael Castellano scored the game-winning goal for Elwood/John Glenn on a long, accurate shot from 18 yards out just three minutes and ten seconds into sudden death overtime to lift the Knights (8-6-4 overall) in one of the out-bracket games of the Suffolk County Class A tournament. Alejandro Bolanos made three saves in goal for the Bonackers.

Castellano scored the first goal of the game on a diving header five minutes into the second half that gave Glenn a 1-0 lead. Fifteen minutes later, East Hampton would tie the game at 1-1 when their leading scorer Ernesto Valverde, blasted a shot into the Knights' goal on a direct kick from 19 yards out.

Last season the Bonackers finished with an overall record of 4-12. This season they doubled their win total and reached the playoffs, posting an overall record of 8-6-2. East Hampton was also the only team to hand #1 seed Sayville (13-1-3 overall) its only regular season loss when the Bonackers defeated the Golden Flashes 2-1 on October 26. Sayville has recorded shutouts in 11 of its 13 wins this season and added another on Monday with a 1-0 victory over Elwood/John Glenn in one of the semifinals of the Class A tournament.
