Funds Authorized To Preserve Montauk Lighthouse
New York State Senators Charles Schumer and Hillary Rodham Clinton announced that the Senate authorized $12 million for the Water Resources Development Act (WRDA) to support a shoreline protection project at Montauk Point that would protect the historic Montauk Point Lighthouse.
The WRDA authorizes the Army Corps of Engineers civil works projects, including navigation, ecosystem restoration and shoreline protection projects. The Corps partners will work with local sponsors to conduct the projects.
The Lighthouse, constructed and completed under the commission of George Washington in 1797, is on the National Register of Historic Places and is under consideration as a National Landmark.
