East Hampton Has Two All-Staters!
Willa Johann and Jessie Stavola each have another award to commemorate the greatest season in the history of the East Hampton softball program. Last week, Stavola, who enters her junior season this fall and Johann, who graduated this past spring, were each named to the elite All-State softball team, becoming the first duo from an East End team to accomplish that feat in, well, the history of East End high school softball.
"It's really exciting to see both of them be named All-State," said Lady Bonackers head coach Lou Reale. "It's even more exciting because Jessie [Stavola] was only a sophomore. They both had fantastic seasons and they both really deserve this honor."
Stavola pitched a Suffolk County high three no-hitters this season along with six one-hitters and eclipsed the school record for strikeouts in a season along the way. She also recorded 11 shutouts this season and a mind boggling 0.30 earned run average while averaging less than one walk per start.
During one stretch in East Hampton's run to the Suffolk Class C championship, which was followed by a Suffolk Small Schools title, Stavola refused to surrender an earned run, pitching 31 innings; recording a perfect 4-0 record. She also provided several big hits, including two in the Bonackers Long Island championship win.
Willa Johann, a team captain, was the consummate leader both on the field and off this season and was either the team leader or among the leaders in batting average, home runs, RBI, on-base-percentage, slugging percentage, stolen bases and runs scored. She received numerous awards for her efforts including the NYSAHPERD INC. Suffolk Zone Award, the East Hampton High School Paul Yuska Award, the Channel 12 News Scholar Athlete Award as well as the Gold Key Award, sponsored by Section XI-New York State Public High School Athletic Association.
"We had an awesome season and we'll never forget it," said Johann during an interview last month.
