New Day Dawns For Village
The Southampton Village election last Friday marked the beginning of a new era in government, as the first-ever black woman was elected to serve as a village trustee.
Bonnie Cannon, who ran on the Citizens With Integrity ticket, won the race for Village Trustee along with incumbent William Bates. Cannon received 550 votes, and Bates, running on the Good Sense Party ticket, received 531.
Bates' Good Sense running mate Michael Irving received 523 votes, while Robert Devinney, of the Heritage Party, received 135. And the fifth candidate for the two-seat race, Blair West, received 502 votes.
Cannon is the first black woman to serve as a village trustee since the village was incorporated in 1894.
