Fatal Accident On Route 114
A crash on Route 114 in East Hampton last Thursday morning claimed the life of a 27-year-old Springs resident.
According to police, Omar Arteaga Lopez was driving a 1997 Jeep southbound on 114 when he crossed into oncoming traffic. The Jeep hit a Chevy box van driven by a 49-year-old Springs resident.
Lopez was taken to Southampton Hospital once East Hampton Fire Department personnel extricated him from the wreckage. He was transferred to University Hospital at Stony Brook where he succumbed to his injuries later that evening.
The driver of the van, along with three passengers, was treated and released at Southampton Hospital. Both vehicles have been impounded by police and an investigation into the cause of the accident continues.
When police rolled the box truck upright, Chief Todd Sarris said Friday, nails and other detritus spilled from the vehicle. The road was closed for approximately three hours for cleanup and the continuation of the investigation. No summonses were issued.
