Lady Whalers Fall In LI Final
The splendid run of the Pierson softball team came to a halt on Monday afternoon when the Lady Whalers lost to East Rockaway 3-1 in the Class C Southeast Regional Final/Long Island championship game at Mitchell Field in Uniondale.
East Rockaway's Katie Loras delivered a two-out single in the bottom of the first inning with a pair of runners on base and the ball was misplayed in the outfield, allowing both of the Rocks (20-4 overall) runners to race home.
That would be all the run support that East Rockaway's ace pitcher Heather Loughran would need as she allowed only three hits while striking out five to out-duel Pierson's terrific hurler Laura Stafford, a sophomore, who also pitched a very strong game.
The Lady Whalers (12-13 overall) won an emotional game against Port Jefferson on May 29, defeating Port Jefferson 3-2 in nine innings to capture their first-ever Suffolk County Class C championship.
Although Pierson wasn't able to keep its postseason train running on Monday afternoon, the scrappy team that refused to quit can look back with fond memories on how it quietly pieced together its greatest season in program history. The Lady Whalers qualified for the playoffs in their final game of the season, winning 19-5 over Southold/Greenport on May 19.
Great pitching from Stafford and clutch hitting off the bats of players such as freshman Samantha Federico, seniors Brina Stachecki and Kaley Castantine and juniors Anna Wilcoxen, Jordan Kosinski and Kara O'Halloran helped lead this season's Pierson team further than any team had gone before. For that, every member of the Lady Whalers should feel a great sense of pride and achievement.
