Red Devils Burn Southampton Girls
In the game of softball, when the top of the order produces a high amount of runs, it usually spells bad news for the opposing team. When the top five hitters in the lineup go 15-for-25 with 12 runs scored, the opposing team loses.
That's exactly what happened to Southampton on May 23 as Center Moriches used a red-hot offense to propel the Red Devils to a 12-2 win in the Suffolk County Class B out-bracket game at Center Moriches High School.
Natasha Davis went 3-for-5, scored twice and drove in four runs for Center Moriches and pitcher Caity Davis held the Lady Mariners bats to only three hits in a complete game victory. She did not allow an earned run.
Southampton (9-11 overall) clinched its playoff spot with an impressive 5-4 win over Babylon on May 19. In that game, Shakoya Davis delivered the game-winning single in the bottom of the eighth inning to score both Kelsey Armusewicz and Tara Berkoski. The Lady Mariners were only a few outs away from being eliminated from postseason contention, trailing the Lady Panthers 4-3 before the clutch hit from Davis turned Southampton's season around.
