Baymen Fall To Southold/Greenport
The Hampton Bays varsity baseball team's season came to an abrupt end on May 23 when the Baymen lost to Southold/Greenport 6-1 at Hampton Bays High School in the Suffolk County Class B out-bracket game.
Senior catcher Doug Conklin provided all of the offense that the Clippers (13-8 overall) would need by delivering a bases-loaded double with one out in the top of the third inning off Hampton Bays starter Charlie Miller who scored three runs for Southold/Greenport.
Clippers starting pitcher David Kubiak would do the rest, shutting the door on the Baymen's offense for seven innings, allowing no earned runs and only five hits while striking out five to record the win. Hampton Bays finished the season with an 11-12 overall record, qualifying for the playoffs in its second to last game of the regular season by defeating Bayport-Blue Point 3-2 on May 11.
Ironically, in that game it was Miller who led his team to its post season clinching victory as he scattered six hits over seven innings and allowed only one earned run while striking out eight Phantoms batters. Anthony Andrews drove home Jon Ledermann from third base with a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the seventh inning for the game winning run.
