Honoring Percy

The world knows legendary jazz icon Percy Heath loved music. Folks in the Lighthouse District also know he loved fishing and Montauk, his adopted hometown.

On Saturday, friends, family and community members gathered at Turtle Cove to honor that love, installing a plaque in his memory.

According to local fishing fixture Jack Yee, when Percy and his wife June first came to Montauk 40 years ago, their first stop was Turtle Cove. June spied a 30-pound bass in the rocks and beckoned her husband, an avid angler. Legend has it Percy saw the enormous fish and said, "This must be the place."

While the world benefited from his musical mastery, Yee said this week, "We had the best of Percy. We had his friendship."
