It's been 20 years since Darlene Lycke lost her battle with cancer. Her memory lives on, thanks to a scholarship her family established a year after the beloved young woman passed.
Last Saturday her mother Joan, and brother John presided over their annual yard sale fundraiser in Montauk. It looked like an acre of items spread out across the lawn at the sale site on Gravesend Road. According to John, each year the sale raises two or three thousand dollars for the scholarship fund, with lots of community members, family and friends donating items for sale.
When the fund was first established in 1987, one EHHS graduating senior was awarded a $500 tuition grant. Thanks to consistent contributions, the award has grown to $2000. It will be presented next month during the high school's awards ceremony.
