Westhampton Boys Tennis Team Victorious In Title
An outstanding season by the Westhampton boys tennis team came to fruition when the Hurricanes defeated Longwood 6-1 on May 13 to wrap up the Suffolk League VII title for the second year in a row. Westhampton also has the honor of finishing first in the league four times in the past six years.
The Hurricanes completed their regular season with only one blemish on their record, a 4-3 loss to Shoreham-Wading River back on March 30, which was later avenged with a 4-3 win of their own against the Wildcats on May 5. Otherwise, it was smooth sailing for one of the best boys tennis programs on Long Island.
Against Longwood, Dillon Pottish, Richard Sipala, Steven Palmer, and Alex Rutherford were all victorious in Westhampton's singles matches while Dylan Jurow and Tyler Schultz defeated Longwood's James Russell and Kyle Barnett at first doubles. Dan Shoten and Karl Grunseich won at third doubles to record the Hurricanes' sixth point.
Pottish, who won the Suffolk County championship in 2005 before finishing second in New York State singles competition, is expected to make another run at the one title that eluded him last season when the state tournament begins in two weeks. Right now, Section XI is still trying to sort out the complicated task of rescheduling both the individual and the team tournament that were both rescheduled several times due to the large amount of rain that fell last week.
If Westhampton has its way, several of its players will be competing for singles and doubles crowns the first weekend of June.
