Mariners Are League VIII Champions
"They're all very excited," said Southampton boys tennis head coach Richard Wingfield as he spoke about the Mariners' superb season that culminated in the team capturing the Suffolk League VIII championship last Wednesday following a 6-1 win against William Floyd.
"We just want to make this moment last as long as it can. Hopefully we'll have some success in the individual conference tournament and we're also looking forward to the team tournament. We've had a lot of fun this year. It was a wonderful experience," said Wingfield.
In Southampton's victory over Floyd, the Mariners won all their matches except the first doubles with players including John Ludlow, Jack Keenan, Barry Boice, Richie Blitz, and Cliff Cirruzzo all executing standout performances on the courts.
"It was a pretty good outing and the kids were excited about achieving their goal of winning the league title," Wingfield said. "I feel a lot of pride when I see what our team has done this season."
Ludlow, the Mariners' top singles player, is seeded sixth in the upcoming individual conference tournament while Keenan and Boice, the team's number two and three singles players, also qualified. Blitz and Ciruzzo, Southampton's top doubles team is seeded eighth in the individual tourney. Matt and Josh King, the Mariners' second doubles squad will participate as well.
"It's been a great, great season and I'm sure that we'll move back up to league seven next year, but right now, we're just focusing on each accolade and making sure that we remember what we've accomplished this season," Wingfield said. "I'm just so proud of all of them."
