Edwards's Arm, Bat Spark Waves

Newfield never knew what hit it. Or perhaps the Lady Wolverines did. Either way, it was a bad day to be on the opposing end of a Laurie Edwards pitch. Then again, when is it a good day to face her?

Edwards, the Riverhead softball team's senior hurler whose career can be summed up in eight words — the best Riverhead softball player in team history — added another significant achievement on May 2 by pitching her first no-hitter of the season and sixth of her impressive career to lead the Lady Blue Waves to a 13-1 victory.

The win was extra-special for Edwards and Co. because it qualified Riverhead (10-4) for the playoffs. Edwards did not walk a single batter as three Blue Waves fielding errors accounted for all of Newfield's base runners. Edwards, the top hitter on the team, helped her cause with another big game, going 4-for-5 with a home run, her 7th of the season, along with a season-high five RBI.

Then last Friday, Edwards tossed her fourth shutout of the season in a 5-0 defeat of Bellport to record her 58th career varsity win. She is currently Riverhead's all-time leader in wins, innings pitched, no-hitters and strikeouts and is a likely candidate to be named the League IV MVP later this spring.
